In the dynamic landscape of business, certification is a crucial tool that empowers small businesses owned and controlled by minorities, women, and socially and economically disadvantaged individuals. Last month, we told you about The Office of Minority and Women's Business Enterprises (OMWBE), which certifies small businesses to increase contracting opportunities with state and local governments. Certification, in this context, is a formal acknowledgment by OMWBE that a company is owned and controlled by individuals meeting specific criteria, such as women, racial and ethnic minority groups, and others facing social and economic disadvantages. The goal is to level the playing field and promote inclusion in government contracts.
The Office of Minority and Women's Business Enterprises (OMWBE) interviewed Noe Castillo, owner of the company Castillo Interiors, LLC, about the benefits of OMWBE certification.
OMWBE: Noe, thank you for taking the time to speak with us. Let's begin.
How did you become acquainted with the certification process?
Noe Castillo: Well, it was through the contracting process, actually. We noticed that some of the bids we were interested in mentioned a preference for certified companies. We wanted to increase our chances of winning those contracts, so we sought certification.
OMWBE: Can you share a bit about your experience with the certification process?
NC: Sure. It wasn't easy, especially for a small company like ours. We had to make several attempts because we were still figuring things out as we went along. We were really trying to grow our business, and we knew we needed help. We finally got help and hired an accountant who assisted us with the paperwork. Honestly, we didn't even realize there were organizations that could help with the application process until we started.
OMWBE: What challenges did you face during the certification process?
NC: The biggest challenge for us was dealing with all the financial documents, both personal and business-related. If you're not familiar with what's required, it can be difficult to navigate. Working with an accountant made the process much easier for us.
OMWBE: What led you to choose a specific certification, such as state certification?
NC: We opted for state certification because the contracts we were interested in specified different certifications, but we felt that state certification would be the most beneficial and easiest to qualify for.
OMWBE: How has obtaining certification impacted your business?
NC: Having certification has opened up many opportunities for us. We've noticed that more and more contractors prefer certified companies, which has directly increased our chances of winning contracts. Some contractors even reach out to us directly because of our certification, and they're willing to allocate parts of the contract specifically to us based on our qualifications.
OMWBE: What value do you see in being certified?
NC: Being certified demonstrates that we actively participate in our community and are committed to working with other companies and organizations. Being part of the Hispanic community, certification has also helped us access more resources. Additionally, through partnerships with other organizations, we've been able to expand our network and access even more resources that have been invaluable for the growth of our business.
OMWBE: Finally, what advice would you give to other companies considering certification?
NC: I would say it's definitely worth the extra effort. I know it can be overwhelming, especially when you're busy running a business. But from the bids I've seen and the trends I've noticed, certification
is becoming more and more common, not just in our state but across the board. And don't underestimate the amount of help available for small businesses. It can be overwhelming, but there are resources available that I didn't even know existed until I went through the certification process.
